Sunday School

Most weeks the theme is based on ‘Godly Play’. This is a unique approach to religious education which invites children to wonder about themselves, God and the world in a way that is playful and meaningful to them.  Godly Play respects the innate spirituality of children and encourages them to use their curiosity and imagination to experience the mystery and joy of God.  It is a modern and interactive way of communicating Bible stories to children and young people.

The children are welcomed by their teachers when they arrive.  They then begin by listening to a story from the Bible, discuss their thoughts and feelings about the story, then take part in a variety of related activities – craft work, drawing, reading, role-play, singing – before coming together for a short time of prayer and reflection.  You can see the pattern of Godly Play, as well as a termly session plan, times and activities on the display board in the Children’s Corner in Church.

Some Sunday mornings there may be a slightly different pattern to the session as we explore a particular issue such as Fairtrade, Harvest or Remembrance.  We also take the children into church regularly to join the congregation for the whole service.  The children are encouraged to sit together with their teachers as a Sunday School on these occasions so that they can participate in the readings and prayers and help with the offertory procession.

We have an attractive Children’s Corner in Church for those children too young for Sunday School (under 4 years) to use, under supervision, during the service.
